Beyond Spores: The Unique Value of Ganoderma Extract for Supportive Care During Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy

2025 09/05

For centuries, Ganoderma lucidum, also known as Lingzhi, has been revered as a cornerstone of traditional medicine, celebrated for its ability to strengthen the body's core vitality. Its powerful polysaccharides and triterpenes are known for their remarkable immune-regulating and tumor-inhibiting properties. Since the 1990s, Ganoderma preparations have been widely used as a supportive therapy for patients undergoing surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy to help improve immune status, reduce the harsh side effects of treatment, enhance quality of life, and extend survival.

However, researchers from the Heilongjiang Provincial Fungal Drug Research Center point out a common misconception. While products like Ganoderma spore powder and spore oil are widely recognized by the public, the more potent and historically significant Ganoderma extract is often overlooked. In reality, compared to spores, Ganoderma extract may offer far greater value and play a more critical role in supportive care for cancer patients, both during and after their hospital treatments.

What is Ganoderma Extract? And Where Does It Come From?

Ganoderma extract is not just a staple in traditional Chinese medicine; it's also used extensively worldwide. It is created through a meticulous process where the key active ingredients from the Ganoderma mushroom are drawn out using techniques like hot water extraction, filtration, concentration, and drying.

The raw material for this powerful extract is the mature Ganoderma lucidum fruiting body—the actual mushroom itself—not the mycelium (root system) or the spores. Modern research confirms that the mature fruiting body contains the full spectrum of Ganoderma's beneficial compounds, making it the complete powerhouse of the fungus. This is why official standards, including the National Pharmacopoeia and guidelines from the National Health Commission, specify the fruiting body as the medicinal part of the plant.

What Active Ingredients Does Ganoderma Extract Contain?

Ganoderma extract is a rich source of essential nutrients like proteins, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. More importantly, it is packed with powerful active compounds, including Ganoderma polysaccharides, triterpenes, and adenosine. Together, these form the foundation of its immuno-nutritional benefits, making it an invaluable supportive agent for those undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Ganoderma Polysaccharides: The Immune System's Ally

Ganoderma polysaccharides, particularly the triple-helix structured beta-glucans, are a key active component in the extract. Recognized as natural Biological Response Modifiers (BRMs), they possess potent biological activity.

Research shows that these polysaccharides can:

  • Repair damaged cell membranes and enrich cell receptors.

  • Protect cells and enhance the activity of crucial enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD).

  • Boost the body's overall vitality and immune function, contributing to a longer, healthier life.

Crucially, Ganoderma polysaccharides don’t kill tumor cells directly. Instead, they work indirectly by strengthening the body's own immune system to inhibit tumor growth.

Ganoderma Triterpenes: The Direct Tumor Inhibitor

Ganoderma triterpenes are unique chemical compounds in the mushroom with significant tumor-suppressing effects, showing inhibition rates from 42% to as high as 82% in studies. The fruiting body contains almost all known types of these triterpenes, with Ganoderic acids being the most prominent.

While spore powder and oil contain some triterpenes, their concentration is far lower than in the fruiting body. Mycelium-fermented products contain only trace amounts.

Studies indicate that Ganoderma triterpenes can integrate into the cell membranes of tumor cells. This action disrupts the cells' ability to adhere, move, and spread, eventually causing them to break down and die (lysis), which helps in controlling tumor metastasis.

Ganoderma Adenosine: The Quality of Life Enhancer

Adenosine is a nucleoside compound in Ganoderma and a fundamental substance for life-sustaining cellular activity. It plays a vital role in improving the body's internal environment by:

  • Breaking down lipids and improving blood flow.

  • Reducing blood viscosity and blood fats.

  • Enhancing the oxygen-carrying capacity of hemoglobin.

  • Inducing the production of interferon, which boosts immunity.

  • Providing a pain-relieving (analgesic) effect.

These properties are especially important for improving symptoms and enhancing the overall quality of life for patients battling serious illness.
